Do you know why you struggle to paint small details like eyes, but others make it look easy?
It’s because of how you hold your model, it should be connected to a stable surface through your body. When painting, both arms should be resting on a stable table. This makes it easier to keep your hands and your model steady.
Working on how you hold your miniatures when painting seems simple, but it can have a massive effect on your painting. It’s worth experimenting with what feels most comfortable and creates the best results.
Resting your elbows or forearms on the table, linking your model to a stable surface, is key. This anchors your arms, limits shaking, and gives your brush hand more precision, especially when working on fine detail.
Where possible, rest your brush hand on your hand holding the mini and your support hand on the model or handle. This creates a stable triangle that drastically reduces unintended movement.
Stick to up-and-down brush strokes instead of sweeping side to side. Vertical strokes give you more control, and are easier to repeat accurately when layering or highlighting small surfaces.
These simple posture and handling tips might seem small, but they make painting smoother, easier, and more enjoyable over time.
