Basing is another area, like the focal points, where a small amount of extra effort can elevate your models.

When your models are on the tabletop, the bases become a similar size to the actual models, so a small amount of extra effort makes a large difference to your models.

Below are two Skaven Clanrats painted in a similar paint scheme. The top model has just texture paste applied to its base, but the bottom model has a snow base with various textures.

An easy way to elevate your bases is to add a second texture, as this adds more interest than just sand or texture paint.

Common ways to achieve this include adding fake grass, larger rocks, or a snow texture.

Self-adhesive grass tufts can be purchased and stuck directly to the base, or flock can be glued to the base using PVA glue.

Slate and cork can be bought cheaply in bulk and are often used as large rocks on bases.

There are as many different bases as you can imagine, including Mars-like red planets, jungle worlds and arctic tundra’s.
