A common tip when painting is to push the highlights brighter, this typically refers to increasing the light-dark contrast of the model.
This is particularly important for gaming armies, as they will usually be viewed from a distance of 4 feet. Highlighting with brighter colours will make it easier to define the shapes on the tabletop with no extra effort.
Contrast is important in miniature painting to help define the shapes of the model. If a model has no contrast, it would be painted as the model below, which was sprayed grey.

You can see how much easier it is to pick out the high points and recesses of the next model compared to the previous model. The next model has been painted in a black to light grey contrast.
