Most YouTubers and top painters have a habit they never talk about, but all do it.
They paint their thumbs.
Not literally, but if they're right-handed, you should be able to see every colour they’ve used on their left thumb.
Before applying paint to the model, they always check the paint on their thumb that’s holding the model.
Every time they add more paint to their brush, they paint a small line on their thumb to check that the paint is the right consistency.
This final check stops most mistakes. If your paint is too thin or your brush has too much paint, you will notice it first on your thumb, not the mini. This means there are fewer mistakes to fix when painting.
Whether you use a texture or a wet palette, the consistency of your paint will change when you are painting.
This is why the best painters paint on their thumbs. Every time they add more paint to their brush, they check its consistency on their thumb before they apply paint to their models.
When I’m drybrushing, I use the back of my hand as a final check to see how much paint I have on my brush.
This small step has saved me so much time by preventing mistakes.
